Fainting While Urinating

Have you ever experienced it or you know somebody that ever had such?

You get up from sleep in the day or night, seriously pressed and uncomfortable due to the feeling as if your bladder is going to burst in a few seconds if you didn't empty its contents.
You dash off to the toilet and begin to empty your bladder, then suddenly you black out and the only  thing you could remember afterwards was when you started to urinate.Every other thing that happened was a mystery.

You might wake up to see yourself in a pool of urine (if you are doing it along a pathway--in the villages),or you might get yourself injured by falling on some hard or jagged surface.

I wish to write this for enlightenment on what actually happens and why and also what you can do about it.

SYNCOPE is the medical term for "fainting' and MICTURITION simply means "urination' or "urinating' so you can see how the name was coined.

Micturition (or post-micturition) syncope is a temporary fainting during or, more commonly, immediately after urination due to a severe drop in blood pressure. Micturition syncope is most common in older men and usually occurs at night after a deep sleep.

It can also happen in teenagers or young adults. It occurs more in males.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

The exact cause of micturition syncope isn't fully understood. But it may be related to opening (vasodilation) of the blood vessels that occurs when getting up and standing at the toilet or that occurs at the rapid emptying of a full bladder. This is thought to result in a sudden drop in blood pressure.

THIS IS HOW IT HAPPENS

When one strains to increase the flow of urine it stimulates the vagus nerve (usually more pronounced in elderly men with large prostates).
The vagus nerve stimulus causes slowing down of the heart (medically termed Bradycardia) and a drop in blood pressure. The heart cannot perform effectively as a pump because insufficient blood comes to it.

Other factors that may play a role in micturition syncope include:

Alcohol
Hunger
Fatigue
Dehydration
Medical conditions, such as a respiratory infection
Use of alpha blockers to improve urination in men with prostate problems

HOW TO TREAT IT

Micturition syncope is uncommon and when it happens, should be evaluated by a doctor because it may indicate an underlying medical condition. Prevention of micturition syncope depends on recognizing the factors that contribute to micturition syncope and avoiding them.

Some helpful strategies to adopt in order to avoid micturition syncope and possible resulting injury are:

*To sit while urinating
*To sit on the edge of the bed for a while before getting up and  going to the toilet.i.e.Don't get out of bed suddenly — first, sit on the edge of the bed and move your legs, making sure you aren't dizzy or lightheaded
*To avoid micturition while sleepy
*To go for micturition before sleep
*Ask your doctor whether any medications you're taking may be causing your condition

As much as possible, ensuring the floor from your bed to the bathroom is carpeted or padded also is a good strategy for avoiding injury from a potential fall.
If you sense that you could have a micturition syncope while urinating, you could hold unto a strong support, close your eyes and try not to empty everything at one,or even strain

  2. Sincerely its not funny. But it seems many of our people are still very ignorant of it and will always attribute it to some jazz instead of seeking medical help.

That's the purpose of this write up.To teach and inform people .Thanks for your imput
