Catarina Migliorini, 20, was one of two virgins to take part in the auction for an Australian documentary.

A Japanese man bid £487,000 to be the first to take her to bed.

Catarina said she would use the money to study medicine in Argentina, according to Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

And in case you think this is not happening just hear what the girl herself has to say about it.

 ''I am 20, I am responsible for my body and I am not hurting anyone,” she said.

“For me, it’s not prostitution. When someone does something once in his or her life, this is not considered a profession. If you take a picture and it comes out good, you are not a photographer because of it.” According to the auction’s terms, Catarina will undergo a medical examination to prove she is a virgin and the consummation will take place within the next ten days.

The "rules" also ban the use of sex toys, kissing and recording, as well as stipulating a minimum time of one hour.

Each virgin will reportedly receive $20,000 as well as 90 percent of their "sale" figure.

Catarina was previously said to be taking part to raise money for the poor.

Mothers Selling Their Breast Milk:A New Trend?

Women in the UK and U.S are selling their breast milk online, despite serious concerns that it could be harmful for babies.Mothers can donate and receive breast milk for free via milk banks. These centres store breast milk for babies whose mothers can't breastfeed. However, they give priority to babies who are sick.

Mothers are using community forums, including Facebook, to make some quick cash out of their extra milk.

Buying breast milk is tempting to new parents struggling to express their own, as it provides babies with better protection against illnesses and allergies compared to formula.The banks collect expressed milk from pre-screened mothers who have a plentiful supply and a baby under six-months old. It is then pasteurised before it is offered to nearby hospitals.

But today doctors in Germany warned new parents against privately obtaining their baby's food through social networks such as Facebook. 

The Professional Association of Pediatricians said that although breast is generally the best option for newborns, mothers unable to breastfeed should not turn to the internet.

Sleeping On Your Back When Pregnant Increases Stillbirth Risk

Pregnant women who sleep on their back may increase stillbirth risk

• May reduce blood flow through a major vein that supplies blood to the womb
• But researchers stress no definitive link established

Pregnant women who sleep on their backs may increase the risk of miscarriage, Australian research has found.

The study, known as the Sydney Stillbirth Study, looked at the pregnancies of 295 women from eight hospitals around Australia.

The five-year study found that women who sleep on their backs are six times more likely to have a stillborn baby.Lead researcher Dr Adrienne Gordon, from Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, said previous research had suggested prolonged periods in this position restricted blood flow to the baby.

It's thought that sleeping on the right side or on the back reduces blood flow through a major vein from the legs to the heart, which affects the supply to the womb.

The researchers added it was important that women who are currently pregnant 'don’t become alarmed if they sometimes sleep on their back'.

Experts have pointed out previously that three-quarters of pregnant women sleep mostly on the left side – higher than the rate in women who are not pregnant.

Company Linked to Meningitis Scare Besieged as deaths Rise

CHICAGO (Reuters) -The company that produced contaminated medications linked to an unprecedented fungal Meningitis outbreak faced mounting scrutiny on Saturday over whether it illegally sold drugs to medical facilities, as the death toll from the disease grew to 15.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said another person died from meningitis, the second death in Indiana. The number of cases of the disease reported reached 201 in 14 states, according to the CDC and state officials.

Illinois reported its first case of meningitis from a steroid injection and New Hampshire officials reported that state's first four confirmed cases from the outbreak, which showed no signs of abating.

Tennessee is the worst affected state with six deaths and 52 cases followed by Michigan with three deaths and 41 cases, including one case of an infection that has not been confirmed as meningitis.

As federal and state authorities scrambled to contain the outbreak, investigators were trying to determine how the medication produced by New England Compounding Center was contaminated and whether its sprawling drug supply business complied with licensing laws.

A series of emails between the company and a clinic in Mississippi reviewed by Reuters show that NECC sold drugs without requiring physicians to supply individual patient prescriptions. The customer confirmed that NECC supplied the clinic with drugs without patient names or prescriptions, which are required by a number of states including Massachusetts, where the company is based.

individuals, families, groups and communities.

In so doing, nurses provide

dignity and embrace the uniqueness of
each patient and the nature of his or her
health problems, without restriction with

To maximize the contributions nurses make to society, it is necessary to protect the
dignity and autonomy of nurses in the
workplace. To that end, the following
rights must be afforded:

 Nurses have the
right to practice in a manner that fulfills their obligations to
society and to those who receive nursing
care.

accordance with professional standards

Epilepsy:Incidence Is Increasing Globally

Epilepsy is twice as common in low and middle-income countries as it is in the developed world, according to an international team of researchers.

They say the higher incidence is linked to increased risk factors, including head injuries and infections such as pork tapeworm and river blindness.

And more than 60% of sufferers in those countries receive no appropriate treatment, they  say in the lancet.

A Lancet editorial said epilepsy had to be a global health priority.

Epilepsy is a condition in which disturbances to the brain's normal electrical activity cause recurring seizures or brief episodes of altered consciousness.

There are about 40 different types. Epilepsy is not a mental illness, but can develop after injury or damage to the brain.

About 85% of the global burden of epilepsy occurs in low and middle-income countries.

The Man Behind Anti-islam Video Arrested

 A man linked to an anti-Islam video that sparked riots across the Muslim world has been held without bond after a hearing in Los Angeles, California.

A judge said Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was a flight risk and cited a pattern of deception when making his ruling, Reuters news agency reported.

Nakoula was investigated for violating probation terms after he was released from prison in 2011 for bank fraud.

He has not been detained over the contents of the inflammatory video.

Nakoula, who allegedly produced the 14-minute trailer for the film Innocence of Muslims, was banned from accessing the internet or using an alias without an officer's permission under the terms of his probation.

Earlier, the Obama administration had requested Google, the company that owns YouTube, to remove the clip. The technology firm refused, saying the film did not violate its rules.

The US Attorney's office in Los Angeles confirmed Nakoula had been taken into custody earlier on Thursday.

"Mr Nakoula was arrested pursuant to allegations made by the Probation Office that he has violated the terms of his supervised release," spokesman Thom Mrozek said.

This is a time to call on all Nigerian nurses to sit up and get ICT compliant.Its no longer an option but a mandatory requirement as more ideas on how to use computers for most activities in the wards will soon be commenced.And no one will like to be left behind,in the cold when others are moving forward.

Nigerian nurses,especially the younger ones should brake away from the old norms and atavistic patterns and follow the modern trend to set the stage for more pragmatic development in nursing in Nigeria.We must be willing to learn and explore,the women should not believe that marriage limits them permanently from advancing in this noble profession.You can go higher  and the time is now.

9,000 MIdwives and Nurses To Be Employed By FG

 The federal government has plans in place now to employ over 9,000 midwives,nurses and community health workers nation-wide to curb the rising maternal and infant mortality rates in the country.

This was disclosed by the north east zonal coordinator, Performance and Results (Sure-P), Engineer Ali Fatoma in an interview with newsmen Tuesday at the Sindaba Hotel, Bauchi during a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) orientation programme organised for midwives and community development health workers under the SURE- P scheme.

Fatoma said that the midwives would be deployed to various rural areas in the geo-political zones and assisted by Community Health Workers (CHEW) and Village Health Workers (VHWs) to support the work going on in the communities

According to him, under the SURE-P programme, the Federal Government would reinvest its oil subsidy funds into a combination of programmes including health to stimulate the economy and alleviate poverty through critical infrastructure and safety net projects.

The SURE-P coordinator, who said that the programme is aimed at complementary the efforts of the Primary Health Care Development Agencies in the nation, disclosed that “this is one of the programmes as safety net for our unemployed midwives and nurses.

“The other component is on infrastructures and we have one on employment. Already there exists nurses and midwives by state government but what the SURE-P MCH intends to do is to bring in more nurses and midwives and even village health workers to attend to pregnant mothers and infant.”

He said that the SURE-P MCH programme the federal government would provide additional funds over the next four years in order to improve the lives of women and children under the ages of five by thereby reducing the maternal and infant mortality rates.

He said the programme would upgrade selected Primary Health Care Centres facilities, set up referral centres in each senatorial zone to handle emergency cases, provide drugs and equipment to selected facilities and provide ante-natal services for a minimum of two to three days immunization of the child.

Speaking during the workshop, the Executive Director of the Primary Health Care Development Agency, Abuja, Dr Ado Muhammad, expressed the hope that Sure-P MCH would improve the health outcomes of women and children in rural communities in the attainment of the MDGs 4 and 5.

Muhammad said that the SURE-P MCH would recruit midwives, community health workers and village health workers for deployment to additional 500 PHC centres selected from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

there is plan to train them on life saving skills, expanded life-saving skills for medical officers in the General Hospitals, integrated, management of childhood illnesses and other initiatives and also provide MAM kits, Outreach kits and VHW(village health workers') kits.

Its not a time of debate about what is wrong and what is right;its not about who is right and who is wrong now but who suffers most-the patients and their relations.Some of them have lost the person that they had spent fortune on struggling and praying he/she gets well.Even saw a full grown man weeping like a baby early in the morning and walking toward the hospital gate,maybe to go tell his people that all hope is gone as they had lost their loved one.

I am yet to understand when we got to this extent even of allowing frivolous issues to blur our vision o the common good and also our oat as medical professionals.And to the point where we no longer seem to have any conscience.

It is so disheartening that such an ugly even should be allowed to happen for two times in a year and somebody is talking about going to industrial court.perhaps by the time we come back from the courts,all the patients would be gone:either to their graves,or irreparably morbid,or into our own individual private clinics where they will even pay more for the '' expert services.''

 Strong cleansers and constant scrubbing are helpful – this can actually lead to increased inflammation; mild non-abrasive cleansing is best. Do not use hard sponge on your skin in order to remove anything. It affects your skin adversely.

 Acne is just a stage that people go through during adolescence – acne may actually begin in or continue through adult life and can affect a
person’s self-esteem whatever the age of onset.

Why do people believe all this and where does the information come from?’

The most important factor in spreading this kind of information is the media; print and electronic. We also get some misconceptions or wrong ideas from the community based on what they have come to believe over the years and which has no scientific basis.

***Did you know that some ignorant people have related acne to not having sex—and this especially is common among the adolescents both in the villages and in the urban? This is a devilish notion that actually instils fear into some young minds and those who have no good guide can derail at this time and may never get back on track again***.

The makers of all these beauty products in their different shades, shapes and sizes are doing it to sell their products. The media now tell us how we should look and once you don’t fit into that, you can go and hide.

Once you buy this hype, the next logical action is to look for the advertised product they have promised to make you look acceptable to the standard set by “a certain beauty or celebrity magazine, television presenter or one radio fashion presenter”

We are not against buying of beauty products but do not be under pressure to change the way you look because someone somewhere told you that you are not a human being unless you look a certain way.

Are Nurses Guilty of  indecent dressing?:

Indecent dressing is the wearing of any apparel clothes that is not socially, culturally and morally acceptable. The society obviously frowns at this modern trend that is causing serious vices and creating serious outcry. The nurse is supposed to be an epitome of every inimitable virtue, a mirror of goodness and powerful light that shines strongly to illumine the dark path of the society where s/he operates.  

The nurse is seen as same both in the hospital setting and outside. The patient and relations that you treat in the hospital will always address you as,”nurse” or “my nurse” whenever they see you either in the bus, train, driving your car, at the airport, church or any social function. And each time he will associate you with the hospital.

His memory associates you with immaculate white or blue dress, injections/drugs, calm talk and smiles. The man, woman or child you cared for in the hospital sees you as that innocent and pure person that cares for people. They seem to also associate nurses with high moral standards and silently sees some as role models of kindness, purity and love.And this is what nurses really represent.

 There is a silent and gradually increasing talk about indecency in the dress codes of some nurses. However this tends to be common among students nurses and fresh graduates.  

And they can be stuffs like tight fitting gowns, skimpy skirts/gowns which some wear to school and work, tight fitting trousers that reveal the body curves and contours, open blouses that reveal the armpits brazenly and part of the breast when she is not on uniform or when assisting in a procedure in or outside the hospital.

 

Always Smiling to Soothe.

This is not at all arguable as colleagues have been complaining and it is obvious.Worrisome is the seeming silence of some school administrations in handling this issue. Either they claim it not significant or they feign ignorance. In all, indecent dressing has certain social, psychological and moral implications:

•    It portrays you as cheap and as one who has no regard for decency and self-dignity. This is because our bodies are meant to be covered and not exposed. We are not animals; we are humans.

•    It encourages sexual harassment. It’s a known fact that many cases of sexual assault of women have been linked to indecent dressing. In the case of the nurse, what she wears to work matters as it can send mixed signals to patients, relations and even some colleagues.

•    It portrays the profession in bad light as some people think and associate nurses with indecent dressing. For the single nurses, this can be a hindering factor as prospective suitors who may be patients’ relations may really be allergic to the way you dressed or dresses as you attend to them and conclude that you are not as noble as is acclaimed.
 Let us uphold the highest standard of ethical,social and moral integrity and let the world see us like that.We are nurses.

Antioxidant:What You Must Know

 WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ANTIOXIDANTS?

“Antioxidants” This has become a common and popular word these days especially with the influx of many foreign food supplements and drugs telling us that they contain “antioxidants”

An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of another molecule. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons or hydrogen from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions produce “free radicals” which are the culprits that we are talking about. These free radicals can start a chain reaction in a cell that can cause damage or death of the cell. Damage or death of the cell leads to many abnormalities in the human body; hence you can see the reason for increased awareness about antioxidants. Antioxidants terminate the chain reaction.

Antioxidants are essential to combat the damaging effects of free radicals.

So what are free radicals, you might ask?

Free radicals are waste products formed in a variety of situations, for example:

• During normal metabolism and production of ATP (Adenosine TryPhosphate), our body's energy currency. This being the case, exercise actually increases the formation of free radicals!

• They are also formed by the body when it is attacked by environmental toxins (e.g. cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, pollutants in the air and water, man-made pharmaceutical drugs and even sunlight).Avoid smoking.

• Another source of free radicals is inflammation.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules which lack at least one electron, making them very unstable. To regain stability these molecules scavenge an electron from other molecules. In this way they themselves become stable once more, but they have simply created new scavengers which go on to create more havoc, especially if they have destabilized and damaged important molecules such as the DNA of the cell.

These reactions are known as oxidation reactions, and are not unlike the rusting process that we have all observed. Rampant free radicals that are not effectively neutralized are thought to be responsible for much of our ill health, and also for ageing (often prematurely).

Antioxidants to the rescue!

Antioxidants are able to interrupt the chain reaction by supplying extra electrons where they are needed without becoming free radicals themselves. So they are critically important to our continued good health.

Where do they come from?

The body is able to manufacture some of its own antioxidants. These include the following:

• Glutathione. This is produced continuously by the body from three amino acids, namely cysteine, glycine and glutamine. It effectively neutralizes free radicals as well as toxins like mercury and other heavy metals. Unfortunately, if the toxic load becomes too great it can overwhelm the glutathione system.

• Several different enzymes are also responsible for dealing with free radicals: superoxide dismutases (SOD's), catalases and peroxidases for example.

Other important antioxidants come from our foods, and this is what interests us here in particular. The list here is fairly long:

• Vitamins C and E are well-known antioxidants. They act best when present together, as the Vitamin C is able to reactivate the vitamin E as it gets used up while getting rid of free radicals.

• Alpha-lipoic acid is also an effective antioxidant. It is commonly found in red meats, vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, potatoes, yams, carrots and beets and yeast

• Phytochemicals are potent antioxidants that come from fruits and vegetables, mostly of the highly coloured types. The two groups are as follows:

1.    The carotenoids are fat soluble compounds from bright red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables mainly. Some common sources are carrots, tomatoes, red peppers, spinach, kale, strawberries and papaya. Well known examples of carotenoids are beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin, but there are over 600 members of the family at least.

2.    The flavonoids on the other hand, are water soluble antioxidants coming mainly from purple and dark green fruits and vegetables such as berries, black grapes, beets, broccoli, spinach and green tea. Some well known flavonoids include resveratrol and quercetin but again the family is much larger than this - over 6000 members!

The important thing is that we need to make sure that our bodies are equipped with all the necessary nutrients to keep free radicals at bay. It is essential to eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Getting a full complement of all the different antioxidant nutrients is far better than high levels of just one or two. And it may indeed be necessary to supplement with carefully chosen products.
